In 2018 and 2019, Safety in Urban Environments acted as a general stimulus fund for interdisciplinary research within the OU. The programme funded a wide range of projects during those years: from PhD studies to smaller research projects, book publications, conferences and network meetings. In addition, specialist Bachelor’s and Master’s courses were developed and two further books are planned (Nooit meer dansen? De stad in tijden van pandemie [Never dance again? The city in times of pandemic], expected October 2021; and Polarisatie en cohesie in de stad [Polarisation and cohesion in the city], expected 2022).

Mid-2020, the Safety in Urban Environments interdisciplinary research programme was reframed as ‘Safety and Resiliency in Urban Environments’. This is one of three central programme lines within Innovating for Resilience, the OU-wide interdisciplinary research programme that began in 2020. This programme enables OU professors to apply for PhD funding, on the premise that the PhD research will engage with as many disciplines and faculties as possible while still remaining embedded within the broader programme context of research and educational activities associated with the theme of safety in the city.
