Doing your PhD@OU: about scientific integrity, ethics and data management

You are probably just started with your PhD at the OU. However, as the OU is an online university the chance to meet other PhD students and to learn from each other is rather limited. The OU Graduate School (OUGS) provides the opportunity to get connected to PhD students from other faculties and to inform and educate you on the highest scientific level. The first part of the course 'Doing your PhD@OU: about scientific integrity, ethics and data management' provides an introduction to the main principles and standards of research integrity as outlined in the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity.

Performing scientific research

Performing scientific research is one of the most common methods to gain better knowledge of what is known so far. To ensure research is well performed, ethical and legal norms have been established. For research involving human participants, there are even more norms because being involved in a research study may bring participants in a risky situation and therefore risks must be minimised and participants’ rights and interests need to be protected. During this course you will learn ethical and legal norms and how to apply them on different stages of a research study.

Research data management

Research data management involves the organization of data during different phases of the research. A distinction is made between creating a data management plan during the preparation phase; collecting, storing and using data during the research and archiving research data after the completion of a research project. More information about data management is provided in this course.
