Conquering fears with facts – arming citizens with an app to help them navigate cities safely
Researchers in the Welten Institute are currently launching a new 2 year project called FearFighter funded by the new OU research focus program 'De Veilige Stad: Safety in urban environments' which will provide citizens with an app to help them draw conclusions about safety in the city in which they live. FearFighter will be based on facts rather than on faulty impressions and myths created out of fear and ignorance.

The team will base their research on existing available sources of data on pollution, traffic, crime and other safety related sensors in order to find out the extent to which current surveillance mechanisms provide useful information and then to assess whether such information fosters or hinders a feeling of security. They will use what they find out to create a hypothesis as to how available data can influence safety and to plan the parameters for an evaluation study which will involve the development and testing of the FearFighter app. This app aims to educate users about data issues/security issues and to combine this with location-based information and up-to-date data. FearFighter will be gamified and created as a location-based ARLearn game extended with access to real-time data (where available, accessible, and technically feasible).

This research is part of the Multimodal Learning and Seamless learning research programs of the TELI group within Welten and to the information security research of the OU’s MST faculty. Please contact Roland Klemke for more information.
