Adoption of Digital Communication Technology by vulnerable citizens in urban areas

Research line: Safety and Resilience in Urban Environments
PhD research project
Researcher: Tessi Hengst
Start 2021

Municipalities and public health care organisations increasingly use apps to inform and support citizens about safety and health (eg the CoronaMelder, NL-alert, Rotterdam’s extreme heath app). These apps should be accessible and understandable for everybody. This project studies the aspects that facilitate or hinder the inclusiveness of this kind of apps. The researcher take into account existing literature, features of these apps, the perceptions of the users and the support that is available for (potential) users. The results of this study will be used to improve the apps and the user support. The second part of the project will evaluate the improved apps on effects and applicability in practice. This project will contribute to theory and practice on implementation of technology in the field of public safety and health in urban areas.
